The International English Language Testing System, or IELTS as it is fully known, is an English language proficiency test developed and run by the British Council in partnership with IDP Education and Cambridge Assessment English.

Which IELTS test should I take?

  1. Academic: The purpose of the IELTS Academic is to evaluate your suitability for an academic setting and to gauge your level of English language competence. The test assesses your readiness to start training or studying in English and includes elements of academic language.
  2. General: The purpose of IELTS General Training is to assess your English language ability in a real-world, practical setting. The exam replicates social and professional settings.

The test that is best for you will depend on whether your objective is to work or study in the country of your choice.

 3. UKVI IELTS

If you are taking the IELTS test to support a UK visa application to study, work, or live in the UK, you may need to take IELTS for UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI). You can take a UKVI in Academic or General Training. Alternatively, you may need to take the IELTS for Life Skills test.

  • Scoring: IELTS scores are reported on a scale from 1 to 9, with half-band increments. Each section (Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking) receives an individual score, and these are averaged to calculate your overall IELTS band score.
  •  Test Duration: The total test duration for IELTS is around 2 hours and 45 minutes, with each section having a specific time limit. The speaking section is conducted separately and can be scheduled on the same day or within a week of the other sections.
